Why did Delia turn out so well?
During infancy, Delia had at least two major problems that had the potential to retard her social development. First, she was born to an unwed 17-year-old mother who had problems of her own and who showed little interest in raising Delia. Second, during Delia’s early years, her mother continued to be indifferent withdrawn, and immature, and her father was rarely around. Shortly after Delia’s first birthday, she was sent to life with her grandparents who loved her dearly. When she was 7, Delia and her younger brother was adopted by the grandparents. Before and after her adoption, Delia had only been feting contacts with her mother, who remained indifferent towards her. Despite finical trouble the grandparent took over the role of mother and father and raised Delia in a warm and caring home environment.
This real life example of Delia illustrates the complexity of social development. Social development refers to how a person becomes a social develops a relationship with others, develops a sense of self, and becomes a social being. Before we tell you how Delia develops socially, let’s examine three theories of social development each of which emphasizes a different aspect.
